Meeting minutes from the 2019 Annual Board Meeting
Introductions - President - Craig Palermo, Vice-President - Bill Fisher, Secretary - Lori Denault, Treasurer - Darrel Spiczka
Approval of By-Law Amendment - Discussion occurred regarding article 4 pertaining to the $1,000 single purchase limit and the $6,000 cumulative limit for an event. There was a suggestion that the cumulative limit be lowered to $2,000. A question arose as to what club event we hold that would require such a cumulative limit. It was explained that our in-house tournament runs $4,500 - $5,000 and while we generate revenue, the limit is not based on net revenue, it pertains to expenditures only. The amount was derived by adding 20% to our current costs to cover future inflation. There was also a question as to what type of costs we have for the in-house tournament. It was explained that costs include purchases for medals, balls, equipment such as computers and monitors, fee for use of pickleballtournaments.com software, food, entertainment, etc.
There was a suggestion that next time the by-laws and financials be displayed so members can view it during the meeting.
A motion was made by Jack Vierkant and seconded by Darrel Albert to approve the by-laws as presented. Motion was passed with 89 yes votes.
New Board Members - Vice-President - Tom Karas (374 votes), Secretary - Lynn Owen (372 votes), and Player Development - Wade Zimostrad (364 votes)
In-House Tournament - Tournament dates are March 23-27, 2020. Our club has 791 members and is continuing to grow. Volunteers serve as board members, courts are kept up by volunteers, the food here tonight was because of volunteers, in-house tournament is organized and run by volunteers. People that had volunteered for our club were asked to stand. Despite how many people stood in the room tonight, we have a large number of people who do not volunteer. For our open board positions, we had one person volunteer and the other two agreed after being asked. This past spring we had no volunteers even though our club would have been disbanded and funds, approximately $10,000, would have been turned over to HOA.
This being said to let you know we need a tournament director for the in-house tournament. Craig asked if we had any volunteers. Katie Fender volunteered. Bill Gardner also said he would help.
We also need help with courts, check-in, sound, and referees. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer. A sign-up sheet was passed for people to volunteer.
QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
Terri Segadelli shared that Bainbridge Island Pickleball Club is promoting the sale of engraved bricks to represent nationwide pickleball clubs and raise funds for dedicated pickleball courts. Bricks are also available for individuals that may want to honor someone who taught them the game. See her about purchasing a brick to support the efforts.
Reminder of Hen house tournament coming up March 18th.
There was a question as to how often our courts are cleaned by Pulte. It was shared that Pulte is responsible for cleaning four times a year/once a quarter. Bruce Burgess also does it and has enlisted volunteers to help.
There was a question as to the status of changing the lights at Sage. The lighting poses a safety hazard during the evening. Bruce Burgess shared that the lamp was replaced but the ballast and reflector was not.
There was a comment about changing the gravel around the pickleball courts to a larger stone that would not blow causing wear and tear on the courts. It was shared that this was brought to Pulte’s attention but is not being pursued.
A member wanted to make the Club aware of a care fund. Funds were requested from the fund for the gates at the pickleball courts.
