2022 Kenya Partners Fundraiser - Update!
First of all Kathy and I would like to thank everyone for their donations to Kenya Partners, which we turned around and helped with building a sports court for the school that we volunteered at.
Kathy and I arrived there in March, and they had just finished laying a pad of concrete that could be used for basketball, pickleball, and numerous other activities that would need a hard, flat surface. Over a 2 week span, we taught over 200 children how to play pickleball, and they all had a great time. We also painted the court markings and lines on the surface, which was a task in itself. As I write this, the people from Kenya have told me all of the children and teachers continue to play pickleball everyday, and it has really benefited their outdoor recreation.
Overall pickleball is a small donation to help their daily lives. Most of the kids we met had no family, food was very limited, and nutrition was minimal at best. When we asked the kids for their birthdays, most of them did not know when their birthday was, much less what year. Even if they get through and get a high school education, unemployment in Kenya is over 50%, so getting any type of job is very challenging, and without a job, that is when they fall into poverty, drugs, crime, etc. Kathy and I helped with teaching the students basic career expectations, goal setting, and we hope we made a difference in their lives.
I can tell you that with Kathy and my presence, along with the over $6,000 in donations from the Festival Pickleball Club, we really did make a difference in their lives, and we look forward to hearing more success from these children. Thanks again for all of your support, and enjoy the pictures.
