October 2018 - Program Time Slots
Members,
The Board wanted to advise on how we determine which programs get the “better time slots”. It is referred to as “The Funnel” priority procedure system.
At the widest part of the funnel would be the program that allows the most members to be able to participate in it. An example of this type of program is the Open / Drop in play session. This session is open to every skill level, both men and woman members of the club. This is why this program gets what we believe is the best starting time blocks for it. The survey and input from the membership also supports giving this program the priority over others.
The bottom of the funnel is the narrowest area. A program that allows the least amount of our club members to participate in it are the Inter-Club play. These programs have participants from several different adult communities, are either a men or women program and is on a sign up by first come, first serve. You could be a member of our club, meet the requirements and still not be able to play in it as it gets filled up before you sign up. Thus this type of program would play late afternoons at the Wagner complex or possibly late morning to early afternoon but would be limited to the Sage complex.
Next program under the Open / Drop in play session would be Ladders. Again this program is open to both men and women. It is not open to all skill levels are it starts at 2.5 to the 5.0 skill level. Most of your rotations would fall under or similar to the Ladder program.
Program sessions that are in need of 8 or less courts may be able to get “better” time slots if they agree to play at the Sage complex. Once though the participants of a program want more than 8 courts and thus want to be moved to the Wagner complex, the Board uses the “funnel” priority system to determine what time slots get assigned to that program at the Wagner complex.
It is of course great that we obtained 16 courts at Wagner to go along with our 8 courts at Sage. Of course it would have been better if we could have all 24 courts at one central location. If all courts were to be at one location, we could have had the Open / Drop in play program session as well as some other program starting at similar times at such a location. As that is not the case we try to assign time and locations of a program based on what gives the most members, the best opportunity to participate in it.
The Board this year is also trying a couple of things to get members to play at the Sage complex in the AM to lessen the crowds and waits at the Wagner complex. We have expanded the “reserve a court” to include reserving courts in the AM at the Sage complex starting at 7:00 AM. We have also started new program – Rated Play. Those players that have either a USAPA or IPTPA rating of 3.0, 3.5 or 4.0 and higher will have a session at the Sage complex. The Rated Play sessions should they become so popular the members playing in them want to use more than 8 courts and play at the Wagner complex, would have to take a late morning to early afternoon time slot.
Currently, you will notice two programs that using this funnel approach would be equal. They are the 3.0 and 3.5 rotations. The 3.0 rotation was given the 11:00 a.m. slot as between these two groups within our club there are more 3.0 members. Thus the 3.5 group currently has the 1:00 p.m. slot.
